Australia – Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) Explained


The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) visa gives a great opportunity to stay back and work in Australia after completing the course. It enables you and your immediate family to study live and work in Australia from 18 months to 4 years. This work visa is a huge incentive for many people to consider studying in Australia. This visa is also known as Temporary Residence(TR) or TR Visa by some students.

The basic eligibility for this 485 Temporary Graduate Visa is :

  • You must be less than 50 years of age.
  • You must have met the English language requirement.
  • Must have enrolled in the approved course for at least two academic years (92 weeks).
  • The approved course must have been instructed in English and completed in no less than 16 calendar months. 


This temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) has two streams: 
 
-Graduate Work stream and 
-Post-Study Work stream
 
Below is an outline of both Graduate work stream and Post study work stream which are available for international students after they complete their studies. 

Graduate Work Stream

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations Australia needs. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily. Students must have completed a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list. This visa is valid for 18 months. Students can bring their immediate family members

To be eligible :

  • You must completed your course as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) study and must have been physically present in Australia for at least 16 calendar months to complete the study
  • You must be awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification and
  • You must meet the English language requirements (a minimum score of 6 in each component of the IELTS exam or equivalent score in another specified English language test), as well as health, good character and security requirements. You will also need to provide evidence that you have health insurance to cover the duration of the graduate work stream visa

Post Study work stream

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live and work in Australia and is usually valid for 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification. Students can bring their immediate family members

To be eligible :
  •  You will need to have graduated from an Australian bachelor degree, masters by coursework degree, masters by research degree or doctoral degree in the six months before applying for the visa. Students who graduate from courses below bachelor degree level are not eligible to apply for the post-study work visa.
  • * You will need to meet the Australian study requirement, meaning that your course of study must have been completed in Australia over a period of at least two academic years (92 weeks) and be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
  • You will need to meet English language requirements (a minimum score of 6 in each component of the IELTS exam or equivalent score in another specified English language test), as well as health, good character and security requirements. You will also need to provide evidence that you have health insurance to cover the duration of the post-study work visa
  • Validity of Post Study Work Visa
  • Students who are graduating from a bachelor degree or masters by coursework degree will be eligible for a two-year (2 year) post-study work visa.
  • Students who are graduating from masters by research degree will be eligible for a three-year (3 year) post-study work visa.
  • Students who are graduating from a doctoral degree will be eligible for a four-year (4 year) post study work visa.

New Regional Visas: International students who study in institutions from regional Australia get an extra 1 to 2 years extension to their post-study work stream 485 visas. Regional Australia is an initiative from the government of Australia to fill the skill shortage and boost the economy in the regional areas of Australia.

To be eligible :   You will need to have graduated from an Australian bachelor degree, masters by coursework degree, masters by research degree or doctoral degree in the six months before applying for the visa. Students who graduate from courses below bachelor degree level are not eligible to apply for the post-study work visa.

Pearson test of English – All you need to know

PTE Academic (The Pearson Test of English) is the world’s leading computer-based test of English for study abroad and immigration.  The PTE exam focuses on real-life English used in academic surroundings. PTE Academic English test assesses the listening, reading, speaking and writing skills of the test taker. It is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide. 

Typically, PTE Academic results are available within five business days.

Test Format: It is a three-hour test with three sections:

                -Speaking & Writing- 77 to 93 minutes
                -Listening- 45 to 57 minutes
                -Reading-32 to 40 minutes

During the three hour test session there will be three main parts to the test: speaking and writing (together), listening and reading. There are twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice through to essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic content, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.

Validity of the PTE score: PTE Academic scores are valid for up to two years from the date of the exam. This means if you fail to go abroad within two years, you will have to reappear for the test and then apply.

PTE fees: Currently the price of appearing for the test is INR 13,300. However, in case of booking for the test late, candidates have to pay an extra charge of INR 665, which means the total amount is INR 13,965/-

Student Part-Time Work in Australia

Working while you study in Australia can help complement your study and living experience. There are a number of reasons you might want to undertake part time work while studying in Australia, including assisting with living expenses and gaining work experience in your study area.

 To make the employment process as easy as possible, you should open an Australian bank account so that your employer can deposit your earnings. You should also apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office to ensure that you are not taxed at a high rate (your employer will provide you with a TFN declaration or you can obtain one online or by phoning 13 28 61)

Most student visas allow you to work for up to 40 hours every two weeks while your course is in session, and unrestricted hours during any scheduled course break.

All Universities have a careers office, which regularly posts employment vacancies. The local industry and employers generally recruit students for part-time work from here. In addition to this the careers office will also prepare students with resume writing skills and give them an update on the opportunities and where to find them. Other options of finding jobs are thru local community news papers and networking. Students will have to meet people, go and personally drop resumes at various spots which can include local service stations, fast food joints, restaurants and other business establishments.

Good communication and English speaking skills, willingness to learn and hard-work are the key to get the desired job .

Finding a job you’re interested can take months and you may need to apply for several positions before you get hired.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for students wanting to study in Australia

Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) is insurance to assist international students meet the costs of medical and hospital care that they may need while studying in Australia. International students undertaking formal studies in Australia, and their dependents (for example, spouses and children under 18 years old), must obtain OSHC.

OSHC is available for a period of up to five years. If the student’s course exceeds five years in length, then OSHC providers may issue cover for a longer period.

When any student lodges his/ her student visa application, they must provide a receipt or other proof of your OSHC payment. The OSHC should commence when you arrive in Australia.

OSHC is offered by certain insurers under a Deed of Agreement with the Department of Health to provide adequate health insurance to students at a reasonable cost. Only a small number of registered health insurers offer OSHC and they are :
